CELEST CURRICULUM WORKSHOP, SUMMER 2008
About the 2007 summer workshop
July 7-18, 2008
The Center of Excellence for Learning in Education, Science, and
Technology (CELEST) is a National Science Foundation funded Science of Learning Center. As part of its education mission, CELEST has been developing and field-testing curriculum modules that explore mind and brain.
The Summer 2008 Workshop will run from July 7-18, 2008 at Boston University. It is open to middle, high school, and undergraduate faculty from across the US. Instruction will be by CELEST faculty, staff, and high school teachers.
The workshop budget provides:
- (1) Authorized certificate of completion to be used towards professional development credits or salary enhancement
- (2) Round-trip airfare to Boston’s Logan Airport
- (3) 2-week lodging at BU’s new Student Village apartment complex with air-conditioned suites
- (4) Meal allowance of $400 which will allow you to dine at the area’s many fine and inexpensive restaurants
- (5) An additional $500 stipend
- (6) Breakfast during the first day registration and two BBQ lunches
Workshop Schedule
The workshop will run Monday through Friday from July 7-18, 2008 from 9:00AM to 4:15PM. There will be three sessions per day devoted to the use of software, curriculum, discussion, and faculty lectures along with a 1.5 hour lunch break.
Participants will (i) explore computer-based experiments and neural models, (ii) develop curriculum lesson plans, (iii) participate in laboratory tours, and (iv) present lesson plans to other workshop participants during a conference on the final day. Curriculum modules you will study include:
- (1) Brightness Contrast Laboratory:Perception of bright and dark surfaces
- (2) Sequence Learning: Working memory and serial order recall
- (3) Obstacle Avoidance: Sensory-guided navigation
- (4) Recognition: Human and machine learning and object recognition
- (5) Associative Learning: Learned anticipatory responses
Each module conforms to Massachusetts state and national curriculum frameworks. CELEST modules use neuroscience to teach fundamental concepts in mathematics and science. All modules involve interactive experimentation, the collection and interpretation of psychophysical data, and the explanation of models of mind and brain. Student materials include work with neuroscience content and developing critical thinking through the completion of formal lab reports.
About CELEST . . .
CELEST is a multi-faceted collaboration that focuses scientific and educational efforts of teams led by 17 scientists in cooperation with the National Science Foundation. Its mandate is to combine training and research on quantitative behavioral and brain modeling of normal and abnormal learning during perception, cognition, emotion, and action with interdisciplinary cognitive and neuroscience experiments.
Results of basic research are used to teach and develop large-scale neuromorphic engineering and technological algorithms to be transferred to industry and government laboratories.
Integration of research and education at all levels, from primary through post-graduate, is accomplished through the development of innovative curriculum materials based upon models of mind and brain, through educational outreach activities in the schools, and through sponsorship of scientific conferences and workshops.
Experience Boston University
The CELEST Curricula workshop will provide you with an excellent opportunity to learn about unique enrichment activities for your science and mathematics classes.
Our staff has a 12 year history running successful summer workshop programs. Hallmarks of our workshops include:
- (1) participant-developed lesson plans designed to work in your school.
- (2) science research lectures by distinguished faculty and researchers
- (3) opportunities to explore Boston during the summer; we will help participants coordinate activities such as Duck Tours, Fenway Park Tours, whale watch cruises, and more; tour the Freedom Trail, visit Old Ironsides and Harvard Square, or dine in Boston’s famous North and South Ends.
Enrollment is limited to 20 participants. Apply soon.
