Van seuen manieren van heiliger minnen - Of seven manners of holy loving
The manuscripts (from: De Ganck, xxi). Three copies survive of Seuen manieren:
- Ms. H, written about 1400, is now in the Royal Library of The Hague (cf. picture above).
- Ms. V, dated between 1400 and 1450, is in the National Bibliothek in Vienna.
- Ms. B, written about 1400, is now in the Royal Library in Brussels.
Modern editions of the original Middle-Dutch text:
- Vekeman and Tersteeg published diplomatically Beatrijs van Nazareth. Van Seuen Manieren van heiliger Minnen. Zutphen, 1970, They did this according to ms. B (cf. above).
- There are several more modern editions, most of them offering the original text and a modern Dutch translation, but as far as I know he latest and most available edition on the market is: Beatrijs van Nazareth. Seven manieren van minne (Middelnederlandse tekst met een inleiding en hertaling door Rob Faesen S.J.). Kapellen, Pelckmans, 1999. It is this text that I used for my study of the Seven Manners.
English translations:
- Seuen manieren has been translated into English several times. The most readily available to the reader can be found in: Petroff, Elizabeth Avilda. Medieval Women's Visionary Literature. Oxford, Oxford UP, 1986, pp.200-206.
- The previous reprints Colledge's translation, from Medieval Netherlands Religious Literature (translated and introduced by Eric Colledge), NY, London House and Maxwell, 1965.
- Another translation can be found in Bowie, Fiona, ed. Beguine Spirituality: Mystical Writings of Mechtild of Magdeburg, Beatrice of Nazareth, and Hadewijch of Brabant (trans. Oliver Davies). New York, Crossroad, 1990.
- There is also the English translation by Roger de Ganck of the original Dutch text and, in a parallel column, of the De septem modis sancti amoris - i.e., the Latin "translation" of Seuen Manieren in the Vita Beatricis, which original Latin text is represented in a third column. In: (Beatrice of Nazareth.) The Life of Beatrice of Nazareth (translated and annotated by Roger De Ganck, assisted by John Baptist Hasbrouck). Kalamazoo, Mich., Cistercian Publ., 1991, pp.289-331.
